When a bamboo shipment arrives cracked, the damage almost never happened in transit. It was decided months earlier – by the moisture content the culms carried when they left the kiln, and by the climate waiting at the destination.
Why bamboo cracks at all
Bamboo is anisotropic: it shrinks far more around its circumference than along its length. A culm wall also dries from the outside in, so the outer fibres contract over a core that has not moved yet. When that stress exceeds the material’s tensile strength across the grain, the wall checks – the characteristic splits that run along the pole. Once a check starts, every further moisture swing widens it. The wall thickness matters too: thick-walled species and large-diameter culms build higher drying stresses than thin-walled ones.
The destination climate is part of the specification
Every material moves toward the equilibrium moisture content (EMC) of the air around it. That EMC differs hugely between a heated European interior in winter (well under 10%) and a humid coastal warehouse (16% or more). Bamboo shipped at 14% and installed in a dry interior will keep drying in service – and cracking – for months. The fix is not thicker plastic wrap, which traps migrating moisture; it is drying the material to a moisture band that matches the destination before it ships.
| Destination condition | Target MC band |
|---|---|
| Heated interior, cold-winter climate | 8-10% |
| Temperate interior | 10-12% |
| Humid coastal / unconditioned space | 12-14% |
What buyers should demand
- Kiln-dried stock with a recorded drying schedule, not air-dried culms seasoned by weather.
- Moisture measurement at packing, with pin-type or dielectric readings per batch, not one number per shipment.
- A stated MC band in the contract, tied to the destination climate rather than a generic “dry” claim.
- Breathing packaging: wrap that slows moisture exchange but does not trap condensation against the poles.
- Acclimatisation instructions for the customer – a week in the installation environment before fitting saves disputes later.
Reading the damage when it happens
The failure pattern tells you the cause. Splits concentrated on the outer face of stacked poles point to rapid surface drying after packing. Cracks distributed evenly around the circumference point to shipping too wet and drying in service. Damage aligned with steel strapping or dunnage is mechanical, not moisture – a different conversation with the supplier. Diagnosing before claiming keeps the remedy aimed at the right stage. Our technology pages cover drying and treatment in more depth, and the pole range lists the MC bands we ship by destination.
Frequently asked questions
Can cracked poles be repaired?
For structural or furniture use, no – the check will reopen with the next moisture cycle. For decorative or non-load-bearing applications, filled checks can be acceptable, but that should be a priced decision, not a surprise.
Does treatment prevent cracking?
Borate or heat treatment addresses durability – insects and fungi – not moisture movement. Only drying to the right band and climate-appropriate installation control cracking.
We kiln-dry and measure every pole batch before packing. Tell us the destination and the application and we will ship to a moisture band that fits.
