Strand-Woven vs Laminated Bamboo Board: Which Panel Should You Specify?

“Bamboo board” is not one material. The two dominant panel types – strand-woven and laminated – differ in density, hardness, adhesive content and machining behaviour, and specifying the wrong one for the application is how projects end up with cracked flooring or blown budgets.

How each panel is made

Laminated bamboo board starts with strips cut from the culm, boiled, dried and carbonised or bleached, then glued edge-to-edge or face-to-face into a plank. The structure stays visible: it reads as bamboo, with the familiar node pattern on the face grain. Strand-woven board takes the same raw material a step further – the strips are crushed into long fibrous strands, mixed with adhesive under heat and pressure in a large billet, which is then sliced into panels. The result is a dense, timber-like material where the bamboo structure is no longer visible.

Why the density gap matters

Density is not just a number on a data sheet. It drives wear resistance, screw-holding, weight per panel – and shipping cost, because a container of strand-woven board weighs close to double the same volume of laminated board. It also drives adhesive content: strand-woven needs more resin to bind the fibre mass, which puts the panel’s emission class under pressure. A buyer who specifies “the hardest bamboo available” and “the lowest emissions possible” at the same time needs to see the test reports for both, on the same panel, before ordering.

Choosing by application

  • Horizontal traffic, furniture, joinery: laminated is usually enough and looks like bamboo.
  • Floors, stairs, worktops, anything that takes point loads: strand-woven earns its price.
  • Humid or semi-outdoor settings: neither grade survives untreated – check the durability processing and the coating system, not just the board type.
  • Weight-sensitive logistics: laminated keeps freight costs down on large volumes.

What to put in the specification

Name the board type, the density range, the emission class with its test method, and the adhesive system. Our bamboo board range covers both constructions, and the technology pages explain the processing behind each. For adhesive and emission questions, start from the panel-level reports, not the resin data alone.

Frequently asked questions

Is strand-woven always better?

No. It is harder and denser, which is exactly wrong for applications needing fine detailing, light weight or a visible bamboo aesthetic. Better is application-relative.

Does higher density mean more stable dimensions?

Not automatically. Dimensional movement tracks moisture content and construction. A dense strand-woven board still moves if shipped at the wrong moisture level – dense material can actually check harder when it dries unevenly.

We ship both constructions with density and emission data per batch. Send us your application and target market and we will recommend the panel type and finishing route.
