Beyond the structural and automotive families there is a group of steels chosen for a single dominant property: wear resistance, hydraulic sealing, extreme strength, thermal expansion or weldability in a specific process. This guide covers these functional steels and the specification points that determine whether they perform.
The functional steel families
Wear resistant steel
Wear resistant plate, grades such as NM400, NM450 and NM500 and the equivalent HARDOX range, is specified by hardness, typically in Brinell, with the number in the grade name indicating the nominal hardness level. The higher the hardness, the better the sliding wear resistance, but the lower the toughness and the more demanding the forming and welding. Quenched and tempered ultra high strength plate for construction and mining equipment follows the same logic at the top of the range. The specification must include hardness, toughness and the welding procedure, because a wear plate welded with the wrong procedure can crack in service.
Hydraulic cylinder and honed tube steel
Hydraulic cylinder tubes, in grades such as ST52 and honed or skived and roller burnished tube, are specified on dimensional accuracy of the bore, on surface finish and on straightness, because the bore is the sealing surface and the hydraulic system depends on its geometry. Chrome plated piston rods add a hard, corrosion resistant surface and must be specified for plating thickness, hardness and surface finish.
Extreme strength steel
Ultra high strength bolt steel and high strength bolting steel, in grades such as 42CrMo and 35VB and property classes 10.9 and 12.9, reach very high strength levels. For these, hydrogen embrittlement is the dominant risk, and the specification must cover the steel cleanliness, the heat treatment and the plating and baking process together, because a class 12.9 fastener can fail by delayed cracking if any one is wrong.
Special purpose steels
Battery shell steel, such as DC53D, is specified for formability plus coating adhesion plus corrosion resistance appropriate to the cell chemistry. Invar and low expansion alloys such as 4J36 are specified for a very low coefficient of thermal expansion, used in precision instruments and composite tooling where dimensional stability over temperature matters. Welding consumables such as flux cored wire for high strength steel are specified by strength, impact toughness and the welding position they are qualified for.
Clad and composite plate
Explosion bonded clad plate, for example a carbon steel base with a stainless cladding such as Q345R plus 316L, delivers corrosion resistance at the wetted surface with structural strength from the base steel, at a cost lower than solid alloy plate. The specification must cover the bond quality, the shear strength of the bond and the ultrasonic inspection of the interface, because the clad plate is only as good as its bond.
Specification points that determine performance
The dominant property, quantified
For each of these steels there is one property that matters most, and it must be specified with a number, a test method and a condition: hardness for wear plate, bore geometry and finish for hydraulic tube, strength class and hydrogen control for fasteners, coefficient of thermal expansion for Invar, and bond shear strength for clad plate.
Welding and fabrication requirements
Functional steels are frequently welded into equipment, and the welding requirement is part of the material specification rather than a separate concern. Specify the welding procedure, the consumable and any preheat or post weld heat treatment.
Consistency and traceability
Because these steels are used in equipment where a single failure is expensive, lot to lot consistency and traceability from heat to part are part of the specification.
Incoming verification checklist
- Confirm the dominant property by the specified test: hardness for wear plate, geometry and finish for tube, strength class for fasteners.
- Check the certificate and traceability back to the heat.
- For clad plate, obtain the ultrasonic report and, where relevant, the bond shear test result.
- For hydraulic tube, measure bore diameter, roundness, straightness and surface finish.
- For high strength fasteners, confirm the plating and baking process as well as the material.
- Confirm the welding procedure is qualified for the delivered material.
Common sourcing mistakes
- Selecting wear plate on hardness alone without considering toughness and weldability for the actual duty.
- Specifying hydraulic tube without bore geometry and surface finish, then finding leakage or seal wear.
- Treating class 12.9 fasteners as a material purchase without controlling the plating and baking process.
- Ordering Invar without specifying the thermal expansion coefficient and the test method.
- Accepting clad plate without an ultrasonic bond report.
