Victrex PEEK 450G Natural is the grade most engineers picture when they hear “PEEK.” It is the unfilled, general-purpose polyetheretherketone that Victrex uses as its own performance baseline, and almost every filled or specialty grade on the market is benchmarked against it. Datasheets are easy to find; what follows is a review of how 450G Natural actually behaves once it leaves the pellet bag and has to be dried, molded, machined and put into service.
The grade in one paragraph
450G is a medium-viscosity, unfilled PEEK supplied in a natural beige color with no pigments or reinforcements. The key numbers stay consistent across lots: glass transition around 143 C, melting point near 343 C, continuous service temperature about 250 C, tensile strength in the 95-100 MPa range and water absorption under roughly 0.5%. The Natural designation matters, because it is the cleanest and most predictable version of the polymer, which is exactly why it is used as a reference material rather than a niche solution.
Processing: forgiving, but only if you dry it
The single biggest source of scrap with 450G is skipping drying. It needs about 3 hours at 150 C in a desiccant dryer before molding or extrusion; wet pellets produce splay, voids and a measurable drop in mechanical properties. Once dry, the window is wide: melt temperatures of 360-400 C and mold temperatures of 180-200 C give full crystallinity. A cold mold below roughly 170 C leaves the part amorphous and dimensionally unstable, so it will shrink and warp later when it sees heat. This is the mistake I see most often from shops used to running commodity engineering plastics.
Machining and dimensional stability
For machined stock and semi-finished shapes, 450G is a pleasure to work compared with filled grades: no glass fiber to blunt tooling, clean chip formation and excellent surface finish. It holds tight tolerances, but two habits pay off. First, anneal stress-relieved rod or plate before final cuts on precision parts, because residual stress from extrusion will otherwise move the part after machining. Second, respect its thermal expansion, roughly 45-55 ppm/C below Tg, which is several times that of metals; fits designed to aluminum tolerances will bind or loosen across a wide temperature range.
Wear, friction and where 450G is the wrong choice
This is where honesty matters. Unfilled 450G is not a bearing material. Its wear rate and PV limit are modest, and dry sliding against metal will gall over time. If the application involves continuous sliding, bushings or gears, step up to a bearing grade such as 450FC with carbon fiber, PTFE and graphite rather than fighting 450G. Where 450G shines is structural and chemical service: outstanding resistance to hydrolysis, hot water, steam, hydrocarbons and most solvents, plus good fatigue strength and creep resistance up to its service ceiling.
Sterilization and industry fit
450G Natural tolerates repeated autoclaving, gamma and ethylene oxide sterilization without significant property loss, which makes it common in reusable industrial, analytical and general medical hardware. Note, however, that it is not the implantable grade. For long-term implants, Victrex’s medical PEEK line or a comparable qualified grade is the correct path. In semiconductor and electronics work, the natural grade’s purity, low ionic content, low outgassing and plasma resistance are the real selling points.
Verdict
As a baseline high-performance thermoplastic, 450G Natural earns its reputation. It is predictable lot-to-lot, easy to machine, chemically almost inert and stable to 250 C, which is everything you want from a reference material. Its limits are equally clear: it is not a wear grade, it is not stiff enough to replace filled composites in loaded structures, and it punishes poor drying and cold molds. Buyers should also plan around lead times and price volatility on prime Victrex resin in 2026, and qualify any lower-cost equivalent against the same crystallinity and purity criteria, not just the headline tensile number.
Bottom line: specify 450G Natural when you need a proven, cleanable, chemically resistant PEEK and want a known quantity, and move to a filled or specialty grade the moment wear, stiffness or implant compliance enters the requirement. Rating: 4.5/5 as a general-purpose engineering PEEK.
